Rana Al Omari is a Project Manager and Programme Policy Officer with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Syria, where she leads resilience, food systems, and climate action initiatives aimed at empowering smallholder farmers and strengthening national food security. With a decade of experience across Syria, Ukraine, Sudan, and Iraq, she has extensive expertise in designing and managing innovative, community-driven programmes that bridge humanitarian response with long-term recovery.
As Syria enters a new era of recovery and transformation following regime change, Rana plays a pivotal role in introducing climate-smart agricultural practices and risk management tools that support farmers in adapting to environmental and economic challenges as she leads the first drought-insurance scheme for Syrian farmers.
Rana co-leads the Bread and Bakery Technical Working Group under the umbrella of Food Security Sector bringing together government institutions, UN agencies, and private-sector partners to promote collaboration, and policy alignment across the food system.
Before returning to Syria, Rana started WFP’s first Resilience and Livelihood Programme in Ukraine, introducing climate-smart agriculture and renewable-energy solutions to support communities rebuilding during the difficult times. She also managed post-harvest loss reduction projects in Sudan and livelihoods recovery initiatives in Iraq, driving impact through evidence-based design and field innovation.
Rana is committed to innovation, evidence-based planning, and inclusive partnerships that build resilient food systems in fragile contexts. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Damascus University and an MSc in Project Management at the University of Salford.
