Dr Raul Huertas is Research Leader and Deputy Head of the Plant Biochemistry and Food Quality Group at the James Hutton Institute, working within the Advanced Plant Growth Centre (APGC). He has international experience in plant biotechnology, biochemistry, and molecular physiology, leading projects on crop resilience and sustainable indoor agriculture, including greenhouses and vertical farming, across Spain, the US, and the UK. His research focuses on legume crops, investigating physiological and molecular responses to environmental conditions and translating this into improved protein content, food quality, and plant-based product applications. Dr Huertas also serves as Science Challenge Leader for Crop Resilience and Sustainability at the James Hutton Institute and as Future Leaders Champion at the UK’s National Alternative Protein Innovation Centre (NAPIC).
