Professor Ingo Hein is Head of Potato Genetics at the James Hutton Institute and Professor of Crop Genetics at the University of Dundee. His research centers on identifying, mobilizing, and cloning durable resistances against major potato pathogens, including late blight, nematodes, and viruses. By applying genomics and genetics to the Commonwealth Potato Collection, his group uncovers novel resistances and works with breeders and industry partners to integrate them into breeding programmes. Current projects include developing diploid potatoes for trait discovery and creating highly transferable genetic markers to accelerate resistance breeding. His work bridges discovery science and applied outcomes, contributing to sustainable potato cultivation and food security.
